NPS Information Assurance Program Recieves Certification as one of Best in USA
NPS Program Meets All National Standards
Monterey, CA - The Committee of National Security Systems (CNSS), under the National Security Agency's (NSA) Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation Program, has certified that the Naval Postgraduate School information assurance program is among the most rigorous in the nation. The NPS curriculum designed by the school's Center for Information Systems Security Studies and Research (CISR) meets and exceeds the National Training Standard for Information Security Professionals (NSTISSI 4011) along with four additional training standards, placing it the top tier of information assurance programs.
In 2000, NPS was one of only four universities nationwide to qualify for the NSTISSI 4011 standard. NPS now joins an even more select group by receiving certification to the NSTISSI 4012 standard (Designated Approving Authority), the NSTISSI 4013 standard (Systems Administrators in Information Systems Security), the NSTISSI 4014 (Information System Security Officers), and the NSTISSI 4015 (Systems Certifier), in addition to recertification for the Information Security Professionals standard. The certification awarded is valid from 2003 through 2006.
The Naval Postgraduate School has been designated a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance by the National INFOSEC Education and Training Program lead by the National Security Agency. To date, only 36 schools nationwide have achieved that status. The CAE program was established by NSA to recognize and foster academic institutions with programs in information assurance.
NPS is also one of only ten universities engaged in National Science Foundation Scholarship for Service program that is teaching new cadres of professionals who will join government service as cyberspace defenders of the nation's critical infrastructure.
"These accolades validate the excellent program constructed through the dedication of the CISR faculty and staff. Through CISR, NPS has an unparalleled program in information assurance homed in the Department of Computer Science," said Cynthia Irvine, Director of CISR. "Our program has breadth and, through our research programs, achieves technical depth. Courses and research range from the inner workings of security hardware to information ethics and critical infrastructure protection."
On 8 April 2003 Irvine attended the CNSS conference in Williamsburg, Va., and received certificate on behalf of NPS from John P. Stenbit, Chairman, Committee on National Security Systems and Assistant Secretary of Defense (Command, Control and Communications and Intelligence) and Daniel G. Wolf, Information Assurance Director, National Security Agency. Since receiving the Information System Security Professional certificate in 2000, NPS has issued over 100 certificates for this standard to students completing appropriate course work. With these new certifications, students completing additional course sequences will be eligible for additional certificates.
The Department of Computer Science is within the Graduate School of Operational and Information Sciences, which delivers graduate level education and conducts cutting-edge research in computer science, information science and technology, operations analysis, and special operations and related defense analyses. All programs are unique in that they include subject matter of military relevance not found at other universities. Through its Computer Science Department, the school offers certificates, masters and Ph.D. degrees with emphasis on topics in computer and network security.
